Cavity Wall Insulation

Is Cavity Wall insulation suitable for me
Do I definitely have a cavity wall?

No. Not all properties have cavity walls. The pictures below show two different types of brick patterns. If all your brick look to have been laid in the same pattern then the odds are that you have some type of cavity. If however every few courses you have a row that look more like you are looking at the end of a brick then this could be an indicator of your external walls being solid.

If this is the case then there are other ways in which we can insulate your property so all is not lost. Have a look at our sections on internal wall insulation, external wall insulation or cavity internal wall insulation for further info.

Understanding the challenges
Can cavity wall insulation cause damp in my property?

Yes, but only if the correct precautions are not taken. As described above, we go to great lengths to ensure that the right conditions are present for a cavity fill before insulating any property.

We can also carry out a “pulse test” to ensure your property isn’t sealed too tight and the moisture build up from day to day living becomes a problem. Where a property is identified as being inadequately ventilated, we will recommend a ventilation strategy to incorporate a controlled means of ventilating the area which will eliminate the possibility of any damp or mould. The adage to look for is “Insulate tight, ventilate right”.

How does Cavity Wall Insulation Work?

Cavity wall insulation is all about filling the space or ‘cavity’ between the two layers of a wall. This space is usually filled with air, but by filling it with insulating material, we can slow down the transfer of heat.
The insulation material works much like a thermos flask. It traps heat within the walls, keeping the warmth inside your home and the cold outside, or vice versa depending on the season.
By preventing the loss of heat through your walls, your house can keep a more stable and comfortable temperature.
As your home retains heat better, you’ll use less energy to keep it warm, saving on energy costs and helping the environment by reducing carbon emissions.

Installation Timeline

Site Assessment

Day 1

Initially, a surveyor conducts an onsite assessment of your wall cavity, employing a borescope—a tool with a camera—to gauge cavity depth, existing insulation status, and detect any debris within the cavity.

Existing Insulation Removal

Day 1-13

Existing insulation must be removed before any new insulation can be installed. This prevents a ‘thermal bridge’ from being created that could lead to dampness in your home. It’s also important any debris within the cavity is cleared for the same reason.

Installation Process

Day 14

We will drill holes of roughly 22mm in diameter along the outer wall of the property to allow us to inject the insulation into the cavity. These holes are drilled on the seam of mortar to ensure that when the process is complete and the holes are filled the visibility of them is kept to a minimum. Once installed, the insulation will help your home to retain heat.

Solar PV Installation

Battery Storage

Solar panels generate most electricity during daylight hours. Any electrical appliances you use during the day, such as your TV or washing machine, will use this electricity to run. However, if the solar panels product more electricity than your appliances use, then this extra electricity goes to the electricity grid. With a battery storage system, […]

Cavity Wall

Cavity Internal Wall Insulation

Homes built with solid walls lose a large amount of heat due to low thermal resistance i.e. cold air from the outside can penetrate the walls and high air leakage i.e. the heat you generate in your home is easily lost through the walls. This means your home is likely to be expensive to heat […]

Air Source Heat Pumps

Used extensively throughout Europe for many years already, air source heat pumps are now rapidly gaining traction in the UK as an alternate source of heating and hot water for properties. Working on an efficiency rate in the region of 300% (as opposed to around 96% from a traditional gas boiler), these systems produce heat […]
